Carolyn Wingo shares her comments about Big B in Big D by David Perryman:
Do you know that El Fenix is the original Tex-Mex restaurant and opened in
Dallas in 1918, making Dallas the birthplace of Tex-Mex food? Do you know that
in 1892 a woman owned one-quarter of the land in downtown Dallas?
A new book, Big B in Big D, by St. B's own David Perryman,
tells the history of business in Dallas from its founding in 1841 until the
present. Although the book focuses on business, anyone who enjoys social
history will also find Big B in Big D a delight. Names familiar to
all Dallasites -- Sanger, Thornton, Sewell, Love, Dealey -- come to life as
the reader learns of their contributions to Dallas. There are fascinating
photographs on every page. A picture of the Neiman Marcus store in 1911
shows well dressed ladies of the day in front of the store, and there are
pictures of streetcars drawn by mules. In a 1920 photo, the Federal Reserve
Building looks just as it does today with one difference -- the cars parked
out front are all Model T Fords.
Big B in Big D is available in the church library. Enjoy!
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
This true story about teenager William Kamkwambas dream and his determination
to build a windmill that would bring water and electricity to his village in
Malawi, Africa. Guided by a few old textbooks, William collected scrap metal,
tractor parts and bicycle halves and miraculously created a very crude
windmill that generated power and a second machine that powered a water
pump for his famine stricken village. Journalist Bryan Mealer heard about
the young inventor while covering events in the Congo. Word spread quickly
and the young man soon began sharing his story. In 2008 William delivered
an address at the World Economic Forum on Africa.
60 Minutes, The Wall Street Journal and PBS have featured this
inspirational story about one person making a difference for an entire
country. A great read! Look for it on the book cart in the church Narthex.
