Neighborhood Service Council, Inc.
Mission:Neighborhood Service Council is a community based 501 (c) (3) after school and summer programs for low income families whose children attend RISD schools. NSC's mission is to "expand kids' horizons". That mission means exposing them to people and places that they otherwise would have no knowledge of. Without NSC these children would be walking home after school through dangerous areas, staying alone until a parent returns home from work. And in the summer too young to work but old enough to stay at home alone, these children would be out on the streets, unsupervised, instead they come to us after school and in the summere where we provide a safe place for them to grow and learn.
NSC has focused on serving the needs of disadvantaged children and adults in the Spring Valley-Coit area of Richardson and Dallas. NSC, founded in 1989 in response to the needs of the changing community in this area, and their programs have been highly successful. Among the results of NSC's efforts are: reduced gang and criminal activity, improved academic performance, lower drop-out rates, and improved school attendance. Since NSCI was founded, instances of crime have decreased 64% in the targeted areas, while the student population has doubled. Many of the children in NSCI programs have advanced to the gifted and talented programs at their schools, and some are going on to college.
